Quick answer: To hire a freelance website designer in India, write down what your website must do, shortlist 3 designers, check their live websites on your phone, and compare written quotes. Confirm who owns the domain and source code before you pay. With me, a basic website starts from ₹8,000 and a business website with an admin panel from ₹15,000. Because the work happens online, your designer does not need to be in your city.

Thousands of people in India call themselves website designers, and their prices and quality vary widely. Some deliver a website that brings enquiries for years. Others disappear after taking the advance. This guide explains what a website costs, how the hiring process works and exactly what to check before you pay.

I am a freelance website designer in India, based in Delhi, and I build websites for businesses online over phone and WhatsApp. So this guide comes from the designer's side of the table, including the questions I think every client should ask.

How Much Does It Cost to Hire a Freelance Website Designer in India?

The price depends mainly on the type of website and the number of features. These are my starting prices, for businesses anywhere in India:

Type of website Best for Starting price
Static / basic website Shops, startups and professionals who need a simple online presence ₹8,000
Business website Growing businesses that want an admin panel and more pages ₹15,000
E-commerce website Selling products online with cart, payments and orders ₹25,000
Domain + hosting + maintenance Keeping your website live, secure and updated every year ₹7,500 / year

When you compare quotes, do not compare the final number alone. Ask what is included: the number of pages, the admin panel, basic SEO, the domain and hosting, and changes after launch. A low quote that leaves these out can cost more in the end. My guide on website design cost explains these pricing factors in more detail.

The Hiring Process: 6 Steps

  1. Write down what you need. List your services, the number of pages, and what the website must do, such as bring enquiries, show products or take payments.
  2. Shortlist 3 designers. Use Google search, referrals from other business owners and designer portfolios.
  3. Check their live work. Open their client websites on your phone and test the forms and buttons.
  4. Talk to them. A short call shows you how clearly they explain things and whether they ask about your business.
  5. Get a written quote. It should list the pages, features, price, delivery time and what happens after launch.
  6. Agree on the payment stages. Paying part in advance and the rest on completion protects both sides. Get this in writing too.

7 Things to Check Before You Hire

1. Live websites, not just screenshots

A screenshot can come from anywhere. A live website shows you the real speed, the real mobile layout and whether the forms actually work.

How to check: Ask for 3 live links from different businesses. If all of them look the same, you may get the same template with your logo on it.

2. Mobile experience

Most of your visitors will probably arrive on a phone. A website that looks good only on a large screen will lose them quickly.

How to check: Open their client websites on your phone. Is the text readable without zooming? Can you tap the call and WhatsApp buttons easily?

3. Page speed

Slow websites lose visitors, and speed is one of the signals Google looks at. A good designer compresses images and avoids loading things the page does not need.

How to check: Test their recent websites in Google's free PageSpeed Insights, and look at the mobile score.

4. Basic SEO

A website nobody can find brings no business. Page titles, meta descriptions, clean URLs, heading structure and a sitemap should be part of the build, not an expensive extra. Ongoing rankings are separate work, covered by SEO services.

How to check: Ask, "Is basic on-page SEO included, and can I edit page titles and descriptions later?" Be careful of anyone who guarantees a number 1 ranking on Google.

5. Ownership of the domain, hosting and code

This is the check people forget, and it causes the biggest problems later. If the domain is registered in the designer's name, you may struggle to move your website if the relationship ends.

How to check: Ask in writing, "Will the domain and hosting be in my name, and will I get all the logins and the source code?" The answer should be yes. My guide on choosing web hosting covers what to look for in a hosting plan.

6. Easy updates after launch

Your prices, photos and services will change. You should not have to pay or wait every time you need a small edit.

How to check: Ask for a short demo of the admin panel, and ask whether training is included.

7. Support after the website goes live

Websites need updates, backups and quick fixes. Many problems appear only after launch, which is exactly when a careless freelancer stops replying.

How to check: Ask what support is included, for how long, and what later changes will cost. Then look at how quickly they reply to you now, because that is usually the best you will get.

Hiring Checklist

What to check Question to ask
Live work Can you share 3 live websites you built?
Mobile Can I test these websites on my phone?
Speed What is the mobile PageSpeed score of your recent work?
SEO Are titles, meta descriptions and a sitemap included?

Updates Can I edit the content myself? Can I see a demo?
Support What support do I get after launch, and for how long?

Can You Hire a Website Designer From Another City in India?

Yes. A website is built and delivered online, so your designer's location matters far less than their work and communication. You can discuss everything on phone and WhatsApp, review the design online, and share your content digitally.

Hiring outside your city gives you a bigger choice of designers. It does mean you should be stricter about two things: get everything in writing, and make sure you own the domain and logins. If you need someone to visit your shop or take photos, tell the designer in advance, because that part may need a local person.

Red Flags to Avoid

  • No live websites to show, only images or a PDF
  • A price given before asking anything about your business
  • A guaranteed number 1 ranking on Google
  • Domain or hosting kept in the designer's own name
  • Pressure to pay the full amount in advance
  • No written quote, and vague answers on what is included
  • Pirated (nulled) themes or plugins, which can bring security problems

Frequently Asked Questions

How much does a freelance website designer charge in India?

It varies widely with experience and the type of website. My starting prices are ₹8,000 for a static website, ₹15,000 for a business website with an admin panel and ₹25,000 for an e-commerce website. Domain, hosting and maintenance cost ₹7,500 per year.

Is a freelancer better than a web design company in India?

For most small and medium businesses, an experienced freelancer offers direct communication, quicker changes and usually a lower price. A company may suit very large projects that need a full team.

How long does it take to get a website made?

A business website usually takes 1 to 3 weeks, depending on the pages and how quickly the content is ready. E-commerce websites take a little longer.

Can a website designer in another city build my website?

Yes. The discussion, design review and delivery can all happen online over phone and WhatsApp. Just keep the quote in writing and make sure the domain and logins are in your name.

What should I give the website designer to get started?

Share your business details, list of services or products, logo, photos, contact details and a few websites you like. If you do not have written content or a logo yet, mention this at the start so it can be included in the plan and the quote.
